What’s the Best Way to Invest $1000?

A Financial Advisor’s ‘Grand Plan’. . .

By Carolyn Curci

Q. How should I invest $1,000 now, and what are the implications in five and 10 years?

A.  Most investors—from the newest to the most experienced—focus on three types of investments: stocks, bonds and money-market instruments. And with good reason. These investments are easy to buy and sell, they provide a wide range of choices, and they have the potential to provide the primary benefit of investing—added financial security. If you have set aside $1000 for investment, I would suggest starting with a mutual fund. With more than 7,000 mutual funds available, you can choose stock or bond funds in tune with your financial goals, which may range from current income to long-term growth.

Once you've made the initial investment in a fund, you can add to it any time you have the minimum amount, usually $25 to $100.  Also, one of the most reliable ways to build your assets is to reinvest the money you earn from the investments you already have. By reinvesting and continuing to add additional dollars to your investment, it will continue to grow for five, 10 or more years.
