Nine Million Women Can’t Be Wrong!

     By latest count, there are nearly 9 million women-owned businesses in the U.S. They employ more than 18.5 million people and generate close to $2.3 trillion in sales annually. Listed here are just a few of them. (Businessmen who have what we need are welcome here, too, of course.) Support them with your business—they’ll help you grow your business!

In 1996, women-owned firms accounted for more than one third (36%) of all firms in the country and provided employment for one out of every four (26%) U.S. company workers.

 

 

Between 1987 and 1996, the number of women-owned firms increased by 78% nationwide, their employment increased by 183% and their sales grew by 236%. Their growth outpaces overall business growth by nearly 2 to 1! 

 

 

Top growth industries for women-owned businesses between 1987 and 1996 were construction, wholesale trade, transportation/ communications, agribusiness and manufacturing.

 

In 1996, one in 8 (13%) of the nearly 8 million women-owned businesses in the U.S. was owned by a woman of color.
